Modern outbound watches your whole market and reaches out only where a trigger makes contact relevant today. Every call enriches the list, meeting or not.
Key takeaways
Filter the list with technographics as well as firmographics. Knowing which customer relationship management (CRM) system a company runs tells you whether you can serve them this quarter.
A call that doesn’t book a meeting isn’t a failure if it captures information. “We’re on Dynamics” rewrites the next outreach.
AI enrichment needs a final human check. Models confidently invent facts. One wrong detail in an outreach kills trust at the exact moment speed of trust matters most.
The relationship funnel runs alongside outbound. One deal travelled book to audiobook to community to live coaching calls before a single sales conversation. A “successful cold call” often started months earlier.
A trigger earns relevance; the message still has to land. A competitor’s announcement is a great signal, and it needs a point of view attached to it.
Around 25 to 30 percent of your market won’t buy this year no matter what you do. Outbound exists to create the conversations with the rest, and it remains the dominant lead channel.
The modern outbound play is focusing your time and attention on prospects that would probably have a higher probability of taking a meeting.

Just because we don’t get a meeting, we shouldn’t think it’s a failed activity. It’s about capturing more information.

What does modern outbound actually mean?
Luigi Prestinenzi describes it as a shift from list to heat map. The old play took a thousand accounting firms and started dialling. The modern play takes the same thousand, adds firmographic and technographic filters, watches for triggers, and asks which 50 are in market this week. Ricavi runs this on itself. Every one of the 2,200 companies in its serviceable market is mapped and monitored. About 292 are showing signals at any given time, and not all of those are ready. Secondary research decides.
The mindset change matters as much as the tooling. If a company won’t take a meeting but tells you which CRM they use, you’ve won something. The master list gets smarter, and the next approach gets more precise.
Where does AI fit, and where doesn’t it?
In the research, with a catch. Ricavi pulls intent data from partners like Firmable through its own portal, and the founders get an 8am email listing the signals found overnight. Luigi checks every one before acting. His warning is direct: ask a model where it got a link and it will sometimes admit it made it up. Reach out on that basis and the prospect will tell you it’s irrelevant, and you’ve spent your credibility on a hallucination. One client’s sales development representatives check a prospect’s website and past projects before every single call, even with a pre-built list.
Why do “cold” calls succeed months before they happen?
Because trust is built in the background. Regan Barker closed a deal where the buyer described his own journey. He read the book and listened to the audio. He scanned the QR code into the community and joined a couple of calls. Then he booked a conversation to validate his problem. Luigi cold-called a chief executive the week before recording, and the man had been following the podcast for months. Human touches and non-human touches, offline and online, stacking up until the timing lands.
The hard work is still ahead of you after the meeting. A quarter of your market isn’t buying this year. Outbound is how you create relevance and build the business case with everyone else.
Questions this episode answers
What is a sales trigger?
An observable event that makes your outreach relevant to a specific company right now. A leadership change, a funding round, a competitor’s move, a regulatory deadline. Triggers belong in your playbook next to your ideal customer profile.
Should AI write your outbound messages?
It can draft, but check the research it’s built on and add your own point of view. AI-sounding messages with unverified facts are the fastest way to become noise.
How much of my market is actually in market?
By the hosts’ estimate, 70 to 75 percent won’t be actively looking this year. Outbound’s job is to start conversations with them anyway, on the right trigger, at the right time.
